The body primarily uses the kidneys to remove excess fluids and waste. Excess acids and cellular waste are carried to the renal system (kidneys) by the circulatory system (blood) and lymph system where the kidneys filter, or strain, bodily fluids. Urine, fluids passed through the kidneys, is an indicator of the pH of the body, normally 6.75 to 7.25.
When testing the urine the pH can be determined. Low urine pH is an indication that the body is saturated in an acid state. If you tend to let yourself dehydrate on a regular basis it is a precursor to kidney disease and your pH will consistently be very acidic.
Another indicator for pH is saliva. When your body has an good supply of essential minerals, your saliva pH will test from 7.0 to 7.5. A lower reading is an indication that the body’s mineral reserves are low and are probably being used to counter, or buffer, acids somewhere else in the body. Urine testing is the best indicator for actual body pH and any acid build-up, while saliva tests are great for determining whether your diet is getting enough essential minerals.
There are various methods for testing pH. The most popularly used are test strips and test rolls. Basically they are a type of lithmus test developed in narrower ranges to determine the pH levels in the body. Test strips are individual strips where the end is specifically treated to determine pH. Test rolls are simply treated paper in a roll used to test pH. Tear off the length desired for testing.
To test pH for saliva (not recommended for best accuracy), move the tongue around the mouth to get saliva flowing. Place the test strip on the saliva on the inside of the cheek or under the tongue. Compare the reading to the pH results provided with your testing supplies.
To test pH from urine many people just urinate on the strip. The better method is to begin urination, stop the flow, continue urination into a clean cup, then to test the pH by dipping the testing material into the urine. Compare the reading to the pH results provided with your testing supplies.
You can test your pH anytime, but in the morning when you wake, before eating is the time most recommended.
